⭐ SOUTH ALIVE & THE PANTRY NEWS ⭐

It has been great to see so many people sharing their views over the last month as we have had our Annual Community Survey and the Annual Public Meeting. Thanks to everyone who came along and everyone who filled in a survey, it is so valuable to us as we hear what is important to you and it shapes what we focus on for the year ahead. We will have the full summary to share with people soon, but we had some wonderful ideas from the community including

  • Refreshing our zero rubbish programme
  • More community get togethers & events – including bus trips, cooking lessons, and lots of support for some more music events and markets
  • Rejuvenating the South City Shopping area – more diverse shops, services and perhaps even a gym.

We love all of the awesome ideas that have come through, but we need the people to make it happen. So if you are keen to make a difference in your community and see some of these ideas come to life, fill out a volunteer form online https://www.southalive.org.nz/volunteer-registration/ or pop in and see us for a chat.

September was also an exciting month as we celebrated the amazing organisations at the Southland Business Excellence Awards. We were honoured to be finalists in the Not-for-Profit section, as it recognises the massive contribution all of our volunteers make in building pride in South Invercargill and making it the great place it is to live and work. Massive congratulations to Number 10 Youth One Stop Shop who won this category on the night, we love the mahi you do for our local rangatahi so well done!

And finally in case you missed it, September has been busy with National Clean Up Week, Te Wiki o te reo Māori, and Mental Health Awareness Week – check out our facebook page for the ways we have been celebrating, learning and connecting over these weeks.

What’s happening at The Pantry:
Spring into a refreshed home and lush garden this season!
Discover the joy of natural, cost effective, and ecofriendly spring cleaning and gardening. Revitalize your space while taking care of your health, the environment and your wallet with these tips:

  • Epsom salt: Pour 1-2 tablespoons of Epsom salt directly into the seed hole before planting as magnesium is an important mineral for seed germination. Also add to magnesium deficient soil.
  • Sodium percarbonate cleans up concrete, bricks, patio and wooden decks. Use 1 cup/ 4L of warm water.
  • Washing soda crystals can be used for cleaning your washing machine and softening water. To clean the washing machine just add 500g of WSC in the detergent dispenser and run a hot cycle. Also degreases hobs and extractors (200g of WSC to 1/2L of hot water).
  • Baking Soda: The mother of all cleaning! It also has uses in the garden. Dilute 1 teaspoon to ¼ cup of warm, soapy water and spray on your roses’ leaves. The baking soda will treat and prevent diseases like black spot, while the soap helps it stick, and is also mildly effective at smothering many insects’ pests.
  • Coffee ground: Great as an exfoliant for your face, it is also vital in the garden, mostly used as a soil enhancer, sprinkle a thin layer of coffee grounds around your plants before rain is due, that way the water will seep down and take the nitrogen from the coffee grounds into the soil.

Find all these ingredients and many others at The Pantry, don’t be afraid to ask our friendly team for more tips.

Also, join the fun at our village market on the 14th of October, we still have table spots available at our community market. Be part of the excitement, share your unique products, and connect with your neighbours. Reserve your spot today and let’s make this market a vibrant hub of local talent and community spirit.

The work that South Alive achieves for its South Invercargill community had an unexpected but very welcome boost from further afield this month.
A wonderful selection of educational toys and resources have been generously donated by Raewyn Overton-Stuart who owns PAUA (Preschoolers At-Home Uniquely Achieving) Early Childhood Home Based Care Service started in Whanganui in 2003 and has now grown to provide care in many regions of New Zealand.
Through our South Alive Pay It Forward programme assisting families in need and liaising with New River Primary School these interactive games are being distributed.
Many thanks to PAUA for this generous donation and we endorse their philosophy of Ngā tamariki o tātou mo āpōpō / Children are our treasures for tomorrow.

⭐ RANGATAHI (YOUTH) UPDATE ⭐

‘Poipoia Te Kākano Kia Puawai – Nurture The Seed, And It Will Blossom’

Kia ora everyone,

Where has time gone?! So much happening in our cool space as always and we are all looking forward to the warmer weather so our outdoor events can start to take off!

I have connected in with the Drive My Life team and can now do referrals for Rangatahi needing guidance with licensing steps, so feel free to come and have a kōrero around this if that’s something you are interested in!

Mark Unwin from the Students Against Dangerous Driving organisation in Christchurch came and met with me, and I have started some activities around ‘Safer September’ road safety with some Aurora students and looking into hosting workshops around the info & resources passed onto me, for the wider community later down the track: keep an eye out!

CV and Interview training workshops round 2 are in plans now, these will be set up as Events via our Facebook page and website; and while aimed at Rangatahi venturing in to Employment – are open to all ages to come and add to their existing CV and Cover Letters, or begin a new one and just to pick up some skills around representing yourself in Interview settings. These are informative, hands on and connective workshops; hosted by me and Krystal from APM.

The Rangatahi Art Exhibition has had great engagement and we have a few submissions! You will have to come down to South Alive during the School Holidays to have a look at what pieces have been sent in! A special shoutout to He Waka Tuia for coming in to our space and curating this.

The Aurora College Podcasting students are about to wrap up for this term, with Episode 7 and then they will begin the journey again in term 4! I have received some wonderful feedback from the students around the confidence they’re gaining and the fun they’re having. You can listen to their Episodes on Spotify at “No one is Listening” (Youth in Invercargill, NZ and Stacey RPC South Alive)

As always, your suggestions for other projects, events or initiatives are welcome and you can find me in The Pod office Tues – Fri between 9am and 2pm if you’d like to come and meet me and have some conversations around other things we can carve into the community for our Rangatahi!

Ngā manaakitanga (best wishes),
Stacey
Rangatahi Projects Co-Ordinator

Please note: Yoga is only on during the school term

We have our own radio show on Radio Southland 86.4 FM, called Stories From The South. This is recorded and released every 2nd Saturday.  The show shares what has been happening, what is coming up and chats with special guests. Have a listen to the podcasts by clicking below.

Plant carrots and radishes together so you can see where carrots are as they take longer to germinate.

If you dont have a garden you can plant in a bucket ! Get planting things like lettuce, spring onions a couple of strawberries, spinach, potato etc.

Don’t plant frost tender plants until after Labour Weekend – they will soon catch up. Tomatoes, cucumber and peppers etc.

Place pea straw in the potato furrows – keeps the spuds warm and aids sprouting.
