South Alive is entering into a partnership with NIWA to enable the local community to participate in a pilot project monitoring the degree of air pollution in its neighbourhood. The community indicated it was concerned about air quality in South Invercargill and that community members wanted to participate in air quality research at a recent public meeting, when Dr Ian Longley, Principal Scientist, invited the community to be part of this programme, through having monitors in their homes as part of a pilot project. This project will come under the umbrella of the South Alive Housing Action team.
South Alive will support this project by distributing air quality monitors and supporting follow-up meetings for project participants and NIWA at our community space. The air quality information belongs to the participants but is used by NIWA (and Environment Southland) to understand more about air quality and will, therefore, give South Invercargill residents more understanding of local air pollution and what they can do to have a healthier home.
