South Alive community development and operational manager Julz Orr (right) thanks volunteer Rex Williams (Fruit and Nut group, left), patron Peggy Peek and volunteer Tamati Ruru (cleaner) and the many volunteers who were acknowledged during National Volunteer Week last Friday in The Pod in South City. Cooper Ayres (3) also attended the afternoon tea.

MANY of South Alive’s volunteers were acknowledged on the 26th June 2020 as part of National Volunteer Week.

The afternoon tea was attended by more than 30 volunteers from the community organisation’s various action groups, including the beautification, fruit and nut, youth, arts, events, housing, trustees, neighbourhoods and pay-it-forward groups.

Trust Board chairwoman Robyn Hickman thanked the volunteers, acknowledging they were “an integral part to South Alive”.

“South Alive is based on a strong volunteer platform.

“You are why we are so strong and a vibrant community in South Invercargill.”

National Volunteer Week was especially significant to highlight the work volunteers did, she said.

As well as helping the community and its people, research had shown volunteering was good for people’s well-being.

Each volunteer also had a choice of a yellow mug with a 9812 letterbox imprinted on it or beanie as a “gift of appreciation”.

Air quality project will use sensors to map city’s smoke patterns

Dr Ian Longely, Principal Scientist NIWA invites you to come to South Alive on Monday 3 August 2020 5pm till 7pm to discuss his air quality project which is now coming to South Invercargill.  He will discuss this project and the management of the prototype monitors involved in it.

NIWA is looking to connect with community volunteers who might wish to participate, through installation of air quality monitors in their homes as part of a short pilot study.

The South Alive Housing Action team encourage you to attend this meeting with Dr Longley  Here is some further information about the project.

For some years NIWA has been developing methods to help communities engage with local air quality issues. This includes empowering people to participate in monitoring the degree of air pollution in their neighbourhoods and in their homes.

Pay it Forward Update:

Whilst the initial response to the Pay-It-Forward scheme was strong, the donation of food bags has slowed considerably since the end of the lockdown. Conversely, the need within the South Invercargill community has continued to grow, with more residents losing employment, having their hours reduced as wage subsidies have ceased and the uncertainty created by Rio Tinto's closure announcement. An incredible 220 food boxes have already been delivered to local families. Providing them with this food security makes such a huge difference.
