MARCH 2020 - NEWSLETTER

Job well done by all the volunteers who made the Trolley Derby & Family Fun Day 2020 happen. With over 500 bags full of shredded paper being filled by hand in the weeks leading up to the day, to the ponies that carried so many happy kids, to the food vendors that fed some hungry people, to the residents of Rimu Street for allowing us to close the road, to the Invercargill Army Cadets for all their energy helping with set-up and pack-down, to mother nature for providing some sunshine, to the community for showing their support and making this a really great day - the list goes on. Thank you and well done Invercargill!

Trolley Derby winners on the day were 7/8yrs - Slade Fordyce; 9/10yrs - Thomas Henderson; 11/12yrs - Douglas Hackett; 13/14yrs - No Entries; 15/adult - Suzanne Leigh. Unique Trolley Design prize, sponsored by Pak’nSave Invercargill - Thomas Henderson.

Thanks to all who filled in our survey form. Your positive comments are appreciated as are your suggestions for change. All went into the draw for a $30 voucher from the Thar & Feather which was won by Connor Jackson.

How does it all work?

A litte bit about the project:
Bread Tags for Wheelchairs has been running in South Africa since 2006, collecting bread tags which a plastics company, Zibo, buys for a small amount per kilo. The tags (high impact polystyrene, type 6 plastic) are recycled, being made into seedling trays. The proceeds are used to provide wheelchairs for the needy. At present about 500kg are collected per month in South Africa, funding 2-3 wheelchairs.

People who were aware of this programme had been collecting tags for this cause in New Zealand for many years and either taking then to South Africa when they visited or posting them. In February 2019, we set up a New Zealand arm of Bread Tags for Wheelchairs in order to promote the programme, increase collection, look into local recycling and streamline the transport of the tags
